If you're a student struggling to come up with the right research topic, think broadly about the type of paper you want to write. From there, you can identify a specific topic that fits that paper.
Argument
An argument essay can be an effective research paper topic idea if you like to write persuasively. This research project idea also gives you the opportunity to choose the topic you focus on. Your project can pose a question and then support one side of the argument. For example, your project can ask "Should uniforms be mandatory in public schools?" Your thesis, then, should explain your stance on the issue. Add research, including facts and statistics about school uniforms and testimonials from school administrators, to support your argument.
Compare and Contrast
A compare and contrast research project challenges you to look critically at two works and identify their similarities and differences. Use this research project idea if your teacher wants you to write about works that you studied in class. One example of a compare and contrast project is one that looks at characters. If the protagonist in two books that you read this semester are markedly similar or different, discuss those differences in your project, citing specific research from the works. You could also compare the writing styles of two authors or even the writing style of one author using different pieces.

A character analysis tests your critical-thinking skills and allows you to delve into the personality of a character from a book you read in class. This project is effective if you found yourself connecting with a character you read about. In this analysis, you will analyze the character's thoughts and actions and tie them into a broader topic. For example, if you find that your character's misogynistic behavior stems from his own relationship with his mother, you can relate it to the author's familial relationships.

Posing a problem and offering a viable solution is another research project topic idea for your English class.
