How to secure your Windows Box.

Hi Everyone this is a guide on "How to Secure Your Windows Box", Since most of the people here run some version of Windows. Some of the members here have very little (technical) experience with computers, so this is aimed more for the newbies and home users who are interrested in Windows security. Time to get started.
Internet Explorer has more than its far share of vulnerabilities. a lot of them being based off of the ability to execute Active Scripting within a web page or HTML email message, it would help a lot of people to simply disable the ability to do so.
Heres How
1. Click on Tools
2.)go to internet options,
3.)click on the security tab,
4. Select the Security Zone you wish to disable Active Scripting for- Internet, Local Intranet, Restricted or Trusted
5. Selecting the default level High will automatically disable Active Scripting but may be too restrictive on most websites.
6. You may want to use Medium as a baseline and customize it. Select the Custom Level button
7. Set Reset Custom Settings to Medium and click the Reset button
8. Set the options under ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins to Disable
9. If you encounter sites that require Active Scripting to function you can add them to the Trusted Sites zone
10. If you encounter sites that contain malicious code you can add them to the Restricted Sites zone
Internet Explorer by (default) comes with these settings
Internet security zone = Medium
Local Intranet security zone = medium low
Trusted Sites security zone = low
Restricted Sites security zone = HIGH
Patching your Windows Operating System
Everyone here knows how many different vulnerabilities there are for Windows operating systems. Most of the hackers here should know that the number one reason for computer intrusions is because patches have not been applied to the operating system. Thats why I recommend everyone who runs a version of Windows to go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp (at least once a week) and do a scan for their operating system. There's a couple different ways to access it:
in Windows/95/98/ME/XP
Go to start, go up to Windows update
In Internet Explorer go to Tools, go down to Windows update.
Now this must be a favorite of mine How many times have we seen on how do I hack NETBIOS? Well my tutorial is gonna teach you how to disable NETBIOS for Windows For Windows 95, 98, or ME users:
Open Windows Explorer (go to start, search, and double click "for files or folders" type in Windows explorer. Or you can simply hit F3 on your keyboard.
Right-click on My Network Places
Select: Properties
Select: Internet Protocol TCP/IP
Click on Properties
Select the NetBIOS tab
Uncheck: Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Click OK
Now anytime you disable NETBIOS you must disable the TCP/IP Bindings to Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing: this is what closes port 135-139
For Windows 2000 or XP users:
Open Windows Explorer
Right-click on My Network Places
Select: Properties
Right-click on Local Area Network
Select: Properties
Select: Internet Protocol TCP/IP
Click on Properties
Click on Advanced
Select the WINS tab
Select Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Click OK
When done restart system for system to change settings.

Next I'm gonna show you How to disable Windows Scripting Host also known as .WSH the purpose of this is to disable the running of VBS scripts. So your system cant be infected with macros, visual basic scripts, etc...
How to in Windows 98
From the Windows taskbar, select Start|Settings|Contr ol Panel. In the 'Control Panel' screen, double-click the 'Add/Remove programs' icon. In the 'Add/Remove Programs' window, open the 'Windows Setup' tabbed page. Select 'Accessories' and double-click.
In the 'Accessories' list, find 'Windows Scripting Host'. Click on the check-box by 'Windows Scripting Host' to deselect it. Click OK to return to 'Add/Remove Programs' window. Then click on 'OK'.
Windows 2000 and Windows Me
WSH is installed by default.
On the 'Desktop', or in 'Windows Explorer', right-click on 'My Computer'. Select 'Open' from the menu. In the 'My Computer' window, open the 'Tools' menu and select 'Folder Options'. Open the 'File Types' tabbed page.
Look for 'VBScript Script File' in the list of file types (if you can't find it, your machine is safe and you don't need to do anything else). Click on the 'Delete' button. If you see a dialog asking you to confirm removal, click 'Yes'.

an antivurus program is esential to your home computer to help you stop mallicious code from entering and compromising your home system. A virus is a piece of code that inserts itself into a host, including operating systems, to propagate. It cannot run independently. It requires that its host program be run to activate it. Make sure you keep your anti-virus software up-to-date at all times.
Next is Trojan Scanners
Your will be thinking i have a good antivirus why do i need a trojan scanner because the truth is most AV like norton (which i used) dont completly clean your computer of the nasty software they only seperate it from the rest of your computer .Trojans have been around for as long as the internet the most famous are Sub7 which seems to be a favorite which was written by Mob Man and Backorrifice which was witten by the cult of the dead cow both are very user friendly easy to setup and configure. SPYWARE
Spyware is small programs that record your internet activity and report it back to a remote host's for research. Programs such as kazaa, kazaalite, morpheous, is full of this crap thats why I never recommend anyone to use a P2P network such as kazaa,<--better off not ####### with it.

Good these are all the thing which is useful for users specially any LAN user to protect their pc from hacker's as well as from Unauthorized Access to their PC resources..Just Apply it!!

I dont have to worry about all these things, there are people here getting paid for the security of our systems ;D
