TERRORISM IN THE NAME OF RELIGION IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN
MOHAJIR LOCALITIES BEING TARGETED BY RELIGIOUS EXTREMISTS

Karachi – 12 October 2001

The religious extremists, who had earlier announced to take out rallies have resorted to violence and hostility in Karachi. Throughout the night of 11 October 2001 and since the early hours of 12 October 2001, dozens of incidents of violence have been reported. The people of Karachi are being terrorised and harassed by these religious extremists, who do not represent the people of Karachi or any other parts of Sindh. These religious-terrorist groups mostly comprise of Afghani and Pashtun population, who are armed with lethal automatic weapons and as in the past have been allowed to openly display and use their firearms. The law enforcement agencies including the police and paramilitary rangers, who are present on the scene, are not even trying to protect the citizens of Karachi. In fact, these agencies are encouraging the religious extremists to open fire upon innocent residents of Karachi and have also allowed them to loot and plunder Mohajir houses and shops in several areas of Karachi.

The supporters of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), i.e. the people of Karachi, have been practically left hostage, mercilessly in the hands of these religious extremists, who are fully armed and protected by the rangers and police. The religious extremists in Karachi have targeted Mohajir localities. Unarmed and peaceful citizens of Karachi are paying the price for not siding with the terrorists. It may be recalled that the MQM organised a huge public gathering of over 200000, on 26 September 2001, in Karachi, Mr Altaf Hussain, the MQM Founder and Leader, addressed this gathering. Since this massive show of solidarity the religious extremists continued to threaten the MQM leaders, office bearers and workers of dire consequences. Most recently, on 11 September 2001, threatening phone calls were received at the MQM Head Office in Karachi.
